Dr. Simon G. Gregory

Lead Researcher,

Simon G. Gregory, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the Center for Human Genetics in the Duke University Department of Medicine. He is an outstanding investigator who is developing methods for identifying genes responsible for complex disorders like MS. He is involved in the Human Genome Project, giving him superb experience for discovering the genetic underpinnings of disease.

Dr. Gregory, his colleagues and collaborators from around the country have been working to identify molecular signatures in the blood of MS patients that could identify individuals who will develop progressive forms of the disease or individuals who will respond to treatment.

The discoveries he and his colleagues have already made have been heralded as the most significant advances in the field of MS genetics in the last 20 years. They have already identified some genetic markers for MS. His current research is focused on turning off one of the culprit genes.

Dr. Gregory and his collaborators are also working to identify how specific immune genes contribute to MS susceptibility, and this may lead to new treatment and prevention strategies.

We are excited and hopeful about the promise of current discoveries in MS research, and eager to maintain and accelerate this progress through this campaign. One of the Society approved research projects that the campaign will support is led by Dr. Simon Gregory and described above.
